Learn to Tie Flies – New Date!

FLY TYING CLASS Our next tying class for beginners will be held on Saturday May 5, 2012, from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.  All materials will be provided as well as the use of tools and vises.  We expect this class to be filling quickly, so please e-mail or call early to get details and reserve your spot.

Some other notes: You can bring your tools and vise if you feel more comfortable using them.  We will provide basic instruction on the anatomy of a fly – emphasis will be on flies for the local waters.  You will leave with flies and a step by step procedure for the flies you have tied so you can practice and tie others in different colors.

Our Instructors are Gary Kokaisel, Dave Schmezer and Ted Baker.  All have extensive fly fishing, casting and fly tying experience.  You’ll enjoy their style of instruction and references of the flies and fly tying techniques to the local waters.

Tying With a Guide

“Tying With A Guide”

Our local guide Capt. Scott MacCalla kicked off our Guide/Shop Program (different Guide or Shop personnel will work with you each Thursday) with such great success that we have changed the time and date to every Thursday night from 5:30PM to 7:30PM.  The club is open to everyone from beginner to advanced and the really good news is – no fee- just bring your tying tools, hooks and materials.  If you are missing some tools or vise we will be happy to loan them to you for the evening and please feel free to bring beverages and snack items if you would like.  So, come on in and learn some basics, pass along a tying tip or pick one up. How Far Will You Go To Test A Fly Pattern?

All tiers like to design new patterns and test them on the defined species.  But how far will you go to do this?  Cliff Rochester, Owner of Fishient – Just Add H2O and an excellent tier, tested some of his new Tiger Fish flies in a camp in Tanzania, Africa.  Yes a camp, on the Ruhidji River with hyena and lions roaring close by in the evenings.  The results, though, were spectacular as you can see.  The rod he was using was the new G-Loomis NRX – a 9 weight and he said “the performance was unbelievable!”

During his trip one of the boats in his party was attacked and dumped by a hippo with the boat driver thrown in the water – he lived to tell about it with his new nick name “Lucky.”  The trip is not for the faint of heart!
